The Passionate Vision Behind Maritimo Recycling... A Commitment to Saving the Adriatic Sea
Blog Home
During Steppin’ Out’s June group trip to Croatia, we’ll meet remarkable people making a difference, like Marjan Žitnik. His dedication to saving the Adriatic Sea from plastic pollution is both inspiring and transformative.
Marjan Žitnik’s story is one of deep personal connection to the Adriatic Sea and a tireless drive to combat its growing plastic pollution. Growing up along the coastline and spending much of his time on the water, Marjan witnessed firsthand the environmental damage caused by plastic waste. Whether during fishing trips or simply enjoying the sea, he couldn’t ignore the stark contrast between the beauty of the Adriatic and the ever-growing plastic waste floating in its waters.
"The first time I truly became aware of the extent of the problem was on one of my fishing trips. We found ourselves stopping every few minutes to collect plastic that was floating on the water’s surface. You can’t remain indifferent when you see the sea that you love being suffocated by waste," Marjan reflects.
Turning Passion Into Action: Founding Maritimo Recycling
In 2017, Marjan took his passion and turned it into a tangible solution by founding Maritimo Recycling, a company dedicated to addressing the pressing issue of ocean plastic. His background in 3D printing and technology provided the perfect foundation for a new approach to recycling.
Marjan shares, “I wanted to find a way to not only clean up the plastic but to reuse it in a way that would directly fund further cleanup efforts. I wanted to create something that people could use, something functional, and show that waste could be transformed into a resource.”
The concept was simple but powerful—collect marine plastic, recycle it, and turn it into useful products. But the execution required a deep commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the long-term health of the Adriatic.
The Recycling Process: Turning Waste Into Worth
Maritimo Recycling ensures that plastic waste collected from the Adriatic is given a second life through an efficient and sustainable process. This includes:
Beach and Underwater Cleanups: Maritimo Recycling conducts regular cleanups along the coastline and beneath the water’s surface to collect plastic waste from the sea.
Sorting and Cleaning: The collected waste is carefully sorted and cleaned to remove contaminants, making it ready for recycling.
Shredding and Dehydrating: The plastic is then shredded into smaller pieces, and moisture is removed through a dehydration process to prepare it for molding.
Melting and Molding: The clean, shredded plastic is melted down and molded into various products, including fishing accessories and, most notably, the limited-edition recycled sunglasses.
Selling Recycled Products: The sale of these products helps fund Maritimo’s ongoing cleanup efforts and create a sustainable loop of recycling and environmental care.
Innovative Products That Make a Difference
One of the standout creations from Maritimo Recycling is the 100% recycled sunglasses, crafted from gold and black bottle caps and jar lids. These limited-edition sunglasses are more than just a functional accessory—they symbolize Marjan’s commitment to turning waste into something beautiful and impactful.
"I wanted to create something that people would want to wear and use, something that would catch their attention and raise awareness. Every pair of sunglasses represents not just a product, but a part of the sea we are trying to protect," Marjan explains.
By turning plastic waste into trendy, unique products, Marjan hopes to inspire others to rethink their relationship with waste and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Adriatic.
Collaborations and Expanding Reach
Maritimo Recycling’s collaborations play an important role in their mission. Marjan partnered with Yacht IN, a leader in sustainable yachting, to create a guide that offers tips on how to protect the Adriatic Sea. Together, they promote a series of initiatives to encourage better practices among yacht owners and environmental advocates.
"Sustainability isn’t just about recycling; it’s about changing how we view and interact with the environment," Marjan notes. The guide provides educational resources and practical tips to reduce waste and support sea conservation efforts.
As part of our upcoming trip to Croatia, Steppin’ Out travelers will have the unique opportunity to join Marjan in a beach clean-up along the Adriatic coast. This hands-on experience will provide a deeper connection to his work, and participants will also enjoy a memorable lunch with Marjan and his family, hearing more about his vision for a cleaner sea.
How You Can Get Involved
Maritimo Recycling is committed to community engagement, and they invite individuals to contribute to the cause by donating plastic bottle caps, which are then transformed into products like the sunglasses. As a thank you, contributors receive a 10% discount coupon to use on the Maritimo webshop.
"We want people to feel like they are part of the change. Every cap donated is a small but meaningful action that contributes to something bigger," Marjan says.
Marjan Žitnik’s Vision for the Future: A Cleaner Adriatic, One Product at a Time
Marjan Žitnik’s passion for the Adriatic Sea and commitment to its preservation through innovative recycling efforts continue to grow. Through Maritimo Recycling, he’s not just cleaning up the sea—he’s changing the way we think about waste, showing us that with creativity and determination, even the most daunting problems can be addressed.
“The work we’re doing is far from over. There is still so much more to do. But every step we take towards a cleaner Adriatic Sea is a victory. We are not just recycling plastic; we are creating a movement of change,” Marjan concludes.
Through his efforts, Marjan Žitnik is inspiring others to take action, one recycled product at a time.
